This year at NYFW, there were a few stand-out SS14 beauty trends I am dying to try.
Two lip colors that defiantly stood out this season was the matte orange seen at Rag & Bone and the bright lavender lip at Prabal Gurung. Both of these neon hues are strikingly bold but I think they can work off the runway as well in a more subtle way.
If you feel comfortable with a red lip I think incorporating the bright orange won’t be too much of a shock. I love how R&B played the bright lip off of the contrasting pastel hues for an interesting punch of color.
On the other hand, Prabal played off the pastel tones in the clothes with matching lips. The fluoro-lavender hue reminds me of something you would see on Barbie, but it’s taken down a notch with simple hair parted on the side. I like that this allows the lip to stand out and doesn’t overwhelm with big hair.
For hair, we saw a lot of the “dirty hair” look which can work off the runways with a sleek parted “model-off-duty” un-done vibe (but maybe not quite so drastically greasy).
In addition, I loved the “Heidi braids” as seen in Rebecca Minkoff, the low-slung tribal braids in Mara Hoffman, the Game of Thrones influence in Anna Sui‘s romantic waves, the gym-inspired headbands in Vera Wang, and finally the sleek-straight 70’s vibe in Donna Karen.
As for nails, nail art is still “in,” as are short rounded shapes as seen in Tibi and Tracy Reese. However, a new shape was also debuted at Kate Spade (below, left), who teamed up with Deborah Lippmann once again to showcase a new matte finish on almond-and-stiletto-shaped nails. Personally I like to keep my nails natural so I will probably be sticking to the simple shapes.
