At the highest point on the beautiful island of Santorini lies the quiet little town of Pyrgos. It provides sweeping panoramic views of the island, all the way to iconic Oia. This hillside village has narrow, winding paths leading up to beautiful churches, shops, castle ruins and crisp white traditional architecture. It's a great place to get lost and explore and admire the classic Cycladic homes. To be honest, it was my favorite village in Santorini. Don't get me wrong, I loved beautiful Oia... and I can't wait to go back and have a romantic stay with my husband... but I loved how quaint and seemingly untouched by the hoards of tourists this little town was. Do you see any other people in my images? No you say? That's because we had this little town to ourselves pretty much. And I love that!
With only approximately 600 permanent inhabitants, it's worth a trip over to get lost inside the empty maze of the winding narrow pathways and feel like you've got the place to yourself.
If you arrive by boat (as we did with Royal Caribbean Cruises), you'll be in Fira. Simply grab a cab or hop on the bus up to the small village from Fira (a short drive away). To be honest, if you can find a cab, I recommend flagging it down. Finding the bus station was a bit harder than I anticipated haha (we kind of wandered around in circles with a bunch of other tourists for a while before stumbling upon it). If you do hop in a cab however, I recommend grabbing the cab driver's card. Because it is more of a local village, you won't find many cabs available to take you elsewhere. We grabbed our cab driver's card and hopped into a café after we had finished exploring and asked their hostess if they would call him back up for us. She did, and our cab driver came back promptly.
It was quite warm when we visited in September (and by warm I mean I was sweating my hypothetical balls off), but this breezy stripe shirtdress was perfect for the occasion. I love how flattering it is, and my platform sandals were so comfortable for exploring that I wore them basically everyday on our vacation.
Have you guys ever visited? What did you think of Pyrgos?
Be sure to stay tuned as I share more of my vacation with Royal Caribbean.
