You've likely heard it all - from drinking a gallon of water a day to eating a healthy diet - the cat's out of the bag so-to-speak on those not so secret anti-aging musts. But let's face it, there are likely many things we could all be doing differently to take better care of our skin. I for one have been guilty a time or two to say the least. But in an effort to take better care of my skin, especially as the years pack on (eek), I thought I would share with you some things I have been doing differently lately. So, low and behold, my top seven anti-aging skin secrets.
Anti-Aging Tip #1: Build up a Barrier
I have yet to find the fountain of youth, but when it comes to preventing signs of aging, powerful peptides and antioxidants are the next best thing. I look for products and supplements that are rich in these free radical neutralizers, like vitamin C, green tea and CoQ10. (I take 400 milligrams of CoQ10 every morning and drink green tea every night). I then supercharge my skincare regimen with a powerful peptide and antioxidant complex, like No7's 'Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum.' It's specifically designed to target fine lines and wrinkles, so it's the perfect way to protect your skin from future signs of aging (and it's also super affordable). And I mean, let's face it, who wouldn't want that?!
Anti-Aging Tip #2: Don't Rub
To boost collagen and prevent wrinkles, I like to apply my moisturizers by gently pressing them into my skin followed by massaging them upwards, rather than haphazardly rubbing them all over. By softly patting the product in to your skin, you will help stimulate circulation and wake up your complexion. And by massaging upwards, you will help flush out any toxins that have built up in your lymph nodes. And whatever you do, don't forget your neck and décolletage.
Anti-Aging Tip #3: Erase Spots
Hyper-pigmentation (dark spots) become more prevalent over time and are a dead ringer for aging skin. Not to mention, they are the bane of my existence you guys! I have super sensitive skin that tends to flare up if irritated, which of course accelerates the production of pigment. Ugh! So I try to keep my cleansers pretty basic and non-irritating. (Cetaphil is my jam). Another easy (and inexpensive) way to correct dark spots is by combining 80% apple cider vinegar with 20% lemon juice and applying it to your skin in the evenings and washing off after a few minutes. The malic acid in the raw, unfiltered variety helps diminish those pesky dark spots and stop the cycle of hyper-pigmentation. If the lemon juice irritates you, use less or you can dilute it with water, rose water or honey. This should help lighten those pesky dark spots.
Anti-Aging Tip #4: Moisturize with Sesame Oil
Ok ladies, while it't great to focus on your face, one important tip is to not ignore the rest of your body. The natural moisture in your skin decreases as you age, so keeping your skin hydrated is key. Plus, old looking hands are sure to give your age away. In order to help slow down my skin from drying out and aging, every morning I massage sesame oil into my skin as a body moisturizer. It's excellent for your skin and has an antioxidant called sesamol which helps to prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It offers all of the natural benefits without the added chemicals you might find in other moisturizers. I also like to even moisturize while I scrub. You can check out my DIY exfoliating essential oil sugar scrubs here.
Anti-Aging Tip #5: Take Fish Oil
Fish oil can help take the years off your face and put years back on your life (it's said to help boost your heart, brain and joint health). This great source of omega-3's also helps to protect against inflammation, a causal link in the aging process. I take one, 1,000 milligram soft-gel per day at night and look for labels that say "molecularly distilled" and thus, free from potentially harmful contaminants like mercury, heavy metals and dioxins.
Anti-Aging Tip #6: Wash Your Face
I don't want to get all stern with you guys, but you should always always ALWAYS wash your makeup off at the end of the day. Your foundation likes to settle into your fine lines and wrinkles, making them more noticeable. (How rude)! And look, nobody is perfect... I used to leave mine on a lot when I was younger, especially if a sleepover with the male species was involved, amiright?! Every now and then probably wouldn't kill you, but eventually your youth will no longer be able to out-match the toxicity of the damage from makeup left on overnight. So, rule of thumb: just don't do it.
Anti-Aging Tip #7: Stay in the Shade
This one should be a no-brainer guys. But use an SPF every single damn day. But, be sun protection smart. You should be using at least SPF 30 daily and SPF 50 and above if you know you will be out in the sun. I also always try to walk on the shady side of the street and don't ever "lay out." Pretty skin is "in."
